Insidious:Chapter 2 (2013)

By KAYLA BOHN

“Don’t do it… Don’t open that door… No, don’t do it!” The words viewers mumble from the edge of their seats when watching a horror film.  You want to know what happens next.  It is scary, but you know something needs to happen and you know it is going to be bad.  Insidious: Chapter 2 was released in theaters on Friday, September 13. The movie forces the audience on the edge of their seats, gripping the popcorn and hoping for more.

Before you can understand Insidious 2, you need to watch the first movie, Insidious (2010).  The first movie has the same thrilling style, so you won’t be disappointed.  It is about the Lambert family, whose son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), falls into a coma for an unknown reason.  After three months Dalton is still stuck in the coma.  During this period the mother, Renai (Rose Byrne), starts seeing signs of ghosts. Renai wants to call a medium, but her husband, Josh (Patrick Wilson), refuses and says he does not believe in ghosts and that she is crazy.  After finally convincing him, Renai brings over Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye), where they begin learning about what is happening in their household.  The same characters are used in Insidious: Chapter 2 but in a whole new adventure.

James Wan, the director of Insidious: Chapter 2 knew exactly what he was doing when he was filming.  All of the events in the film are clearly explained throughout the movie.  Every scene flows smoothly from one to the next.  The lighting, or lack of lighting, is perfect, giving the film and the setting a creepy effect.  There is constantly a lack of music, which makes the movie all the more suspenseful.

Leigh Whannell, the writer, wrote the dialog to match the characters perfectly.  Some of the dialog itself is even creepy – I will never be able to listen to the song Row Row Row Your Boat the same way ever again.  The antagonists are creepy, as they should be. Their costume design, especially for one antagonist, is perfect.  It brings creepy to a whole new level.

This movie is meant to build anticipation and evoke fear!  I was sitting in the theater with some friends, watching this movie and we all were on the edge of our seat seats screams. I even dropped my bag of Swedish fish, which was still mostly full!  Chapter 2 is without a doubt scarier than the first one.  The plot answered so many questions from the first movie, and it left more questions… maybe a chapter three?

Insidious: Chapter 2 is a must see for horror film lovers.  If you are unsure if you want to watch this movie, try to watch other movies directed by James Wan.  These movies include, but are not limited to, Saw, The Conjuring, Death Sentence, and Dead Silence.  If you love horror films, you are sure to love this movie as well.
