Saints Defeat DCWBB

(Adrian, Michigan) Monday evening the Defiance College Women’s Basketball team dropped a game to Siena Heights, 84-55.

In the first quarter, Defiance took a lead with 7 straight points from Rogers, Siena answered with 2 points at the 7:18 mark, and Rogers then connected for another 3 pointer to make the score 10-2. Whitney Schalk answered a Saints run with 5 points and ended the period up, 19-18.

The Saints came out ready to go in the second quarter getting their first lead of the game, 20-19. The Yellow Jackets and the Saints went back and forth scoring before the Saints outscored Defiance in the final 2 minutes of the second quarter, to go into halftime Siena Heights up 46-37.

Siena Heights defense came out quick and fast as they held Defiance scoreless for almost 4 minutes before Ervin connected with the bucket with 5:03 left in the quarter to bring the score to 43-60. The Saints continued to dominate the third quarter finishing with a layup, the score 68-49 heading into the final quarter.

Saints quickly up 8 points in the beginning of the fourth pushed their lead 79-51 with 5:25 left on the clock. The Yellow Jackets tried to get something going in the final minutes of the game, but ended up getting defeated 84-55.

Junior Lauren Rogers led the team with 14 points and 5 rebounds, while junior Sam Ervin ended with 10 points and 6 rebounds for Defiance. Ashley Lee had 4 assists for the Yellow Jackets. As a team DCWB finished 31 for 71, 43.7%, from the floor while shooting 42.1% three pointers, 8 for 19.

Senior Whitney Schalk said this about the game; “We started out hot and played well for a while against scholarship players. But when they began building a lead we struggled to keep up”.
