Jackets Fall to Alma

(Defiance, Ohio) Early struggles result in a loss for the Yellow Jackets in a non conference game against Alma, Michigan on Tuesday, 84-69.

Defiance started off on top 10-9 against Alma until they answered the Yellow Jackets with a three pointer and went on a run with 3:59 remaining, taking it to a Scots lead, 21-16. Senior Whitney Schalk with a bucket made the score 21-18 with 2:10 to play. Junior Sam Ervin closed out the first quarter with  three, to cut the lead 25-23 Scots.

The Yellow Jackets started off scoreless for nearly four minutes in the beginning of the second period, before Lee got a 3 pointer in to end the drought with 5:57 left in the first half. Score now 35-26, Alma went on a 6-0 run over the next three minutes making the score 41-26. Senior Mekai White helped out Defiance by adding 7 points before the end of the first half cutting the lead to 41-33.

The Scots came out of the locker room charging ahead early as they got their largest lead 55-38 with 5:49 left in the third quarter. Defiance finally getting something going on the offensive side with a jumper and a three pulled them within a 10 point game, 55-45. After 3 quarters, Alma was only up by 8, with a score of 60-42 heading into the final period.

Alma continued to bring the hot shooting out on the court, once again making the lead 10 points with back to back buckets. A three from DC, with an answer from Alma with 5:34 left brought the score to 75-61. Outscoring the Jackets 24-17 in the fourth quarter, the Scots defeated the Yellow Jackets.

Sam Ervin said about the game, “We struggled to score in the second quarter and they got hot shooting. Our defense really struggled.”

Lauren Rogers and Ashley Lee both had 13 points each, and as a team the Yellow Jackets shot at 39.7% from the field and had 29 rebounds for the game, lead by Danielle Carruthers with 7 of the 29. Whitney Schalk led the team with 6 assists.

Defiance is back December 30th, as they host Adrian College in non HCAC play in the Weaner Center at 1 pm.
