Jackets Fall to Transy; Jackets Defeat the Mount

(Lexington, Kentucky)- The Yellow Jackets were taken down in HCAC play, 65-52, at Transylvania on Saturday afternoon.

Transylvania started out with a 4-0 lead before Schalk connected with ROgers who hit a 3 pointer to bring it to 3-4 with 8:28 left to play in the first period. Defiance kept chipping away at the deficit to get in the lead 9-7 with 6:52 left in the first. The teams went back and forth before Transy took the lead back 13-9. Schalk with an assist left the score at 15-20 Transy up to finish the first quarter.

A slow start to the second period led to senior Mekai White hitting a three and Shelby Stamm also from behind the arc bringing it to a tie, 21-21. The Pioneers took a 6-0 run after that, up 27-21. Transy continued to bring the offense as they took their biggest lead 34-23. Ervin with a shot at the buzzer brings it to 34-25, a Pioneer lead at the end of the second period.

The Pioneers came out of the locker room ready to go as they pushed the score to 42-30 with 7:15 left in the third. DC went on a 5-0 run before the quarter ended, and they went into the final quarter trailing 40-51.

Carrying the momentum into the last period, the Yellow Jackets bring the score to within 7 points. Carruthers continued to be successful in the post as she got a three point play with 6:33 left. The Pioneers pushed on to take the win with a final score of 65-52.

Samantha Ervin said, “It was a close game that we should have won, in the third quarter we struggled with box outs and turnovers.”

Lauren Rogers led DC with 14 points, while also having 7 rebounds. Schalk had 4 assists on the game.

(Defiance, Ohio)- The DCWBB team claimed a 61-651 victory in conference play over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday afternoon in the Karl H. Weaner Center.

The Lions came out in the first quarter ready to go as they took a 14 point lead right out of the gates, leaving the score at 16-4 with about 4 and a half minutes left. Schalk with a jumpshot ending the run, but MSJ answered. A layup by Sidney Faine was the last points of the first quarter, cutting the deficit to 10.

At the start of the second, the Lions came out and scored the first 5 points to put them in the lead by 15. A DC spark of energy started at the 8:34 mark, cutting the lead to 9 as Ervin got 4 straight points. The Yellow Jackets then scored 9 points and Stamm hit a 3 to make the score 23-21, Lions up by only 2. At halftime, MSJ was up, 25-23.

MSJ came out of the locker room and took the lead back up to 9, but jumpers from Ashley Lee and Lauren Rogers cut it to 5. Defiance took their first lead of the game after Stamm and Ervin both connected a few times. The Lions tied it back up before Stamm hit another three to give the Jackets a 41-38 lead. Free throws and a layup by DC, and a three from MSJ ended the third quarter DC up, 45-41.

The Lions kept up as they cut the lead to 1 in the first two minutes of the last quarter. An and one by Ervin and a pair of free throws from Yant put DC back ahead by 6. The Yellow Jackets put up a 9 point lead before an MSJ three pointer to cut it back to 6 points with two minutes left to play. Ervin hit a layup and Stamm got two free throws to make the lead 10 and come out with the win 61-51.

For Defiance, Sam Ervin lead the scoring with a career high of 23 points with 9 rebounds, Shelby Stamm had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and senior Whitney Schalk with 7 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists in the victory against MSJ. Whitney Schalk said this about the game, “While tough, tough losses exposes weaknesses for us, it shows us areas of our game we needed to improved immediately”.

Mekai White had this to say about the game, “This was a game where the team realized our potential and set the bar for what we can play to.”

Defiance plays another HCAC game on Wednesday, January 17th as they play Earlham at 7:30pm in the Weaner Center. Go Jackets!
