Going into a traditional college classroom can easily create a wave of anxiety, stress and intimidation. Whether it’s from the pressure of understanding new material quickly, the fear of falling behind, or the overwhelming feeling of just being around other students or even the professor. Luckily, Defiance College has many student success services that can tackle the stressors that come with learning.
Student Success Services are provided for students who need an extra helping hand with their academic performance, understanding material or for those who just need a new way to study. Services include peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, writing consultants, and more, all located in the Bottom level of the Pilgrim Library.
To start with, peer tutoring can be beneficial if one strives on one-on-one guidance from an upperclassman who has previously been in the same mindset or class you are in at this very instance. Peer mentoring relies on relatable and shared experiences. Their advice is based heavily on how well they understood the material and what kind of studying worked for them.
In a similar fashion, Supplemental Instruction has the ability to lift the weight off of your shoulders for classes that tend to be historically harder than others. Supplemental Instruction is a group or class study session ran by a student who have excelled in the class and knows how to explain the material in a way that the professor cannot. The instructor or leader is there to help you build stronger studying habits, as well as making a complex lecture seem more bearable.
Another useful service are the writing consultants. The writing shop is designed to help students with their writing assignments. Upperclassmen who have already aced the class or who enjoy writing can provide constructive criticism on punctuation, the paper’s legibility, and even whether the paper fits the correct format.
Further guidance and advice can be accessed through the Pilgrim Library website, which includes the library’s fall hours, dates and times of the success services listed above, and tips and skills for easier learning, helpful studying, and better planning. Taking advantage of these tools can turn an “oh no” moment into an “Aha” moment is just a split second.
