It does not take long for a person to figure out that the weather in Defiance is unpredictable. A person may put on a hoodie while going out in the morning and must put on shorts by the afternoon. For those who come from places where it is always warm, especially international students, the weather can be one of the biggest adjustments.
The start of the fall semester still felt like summer. In August, Defiance experienced warm weather, and the temperatures were in the 80s. However, the biggest change occurs when the fall season begins. Fall can start with warm weather and suddenly turn colder. In September 2026, Defiance had the temperature of 88 degrees on the first day of the month. In a couple of weeks, however, students will need to take out their jackets as soon as they get out of bed. The changing colors of leaves also make fall a beautiful period in the Defiance College calendar.
Winter, however, is an entirely different experience. It is a season of freezing temperatures and snow. There were several days with the temperature of 20 degrees and even 10 degrees on New Year’s Day in January 2026. Students who are used to the absence of snow will surely enjoy its arrival for the first time, but moving around the campus in such cold weather is not that great.
While spring will bring the warm weather again at some point, Ohio does not make an easy transition into spring. Cold mornings, rainy afternoons, or warm evenings are possible all within the same week.
Life in Defiance teaches the students a big lesson – always keep an eye on the weather forecast before going out of the room. Having an extra hoodie or jacket in case of sudden changes will never hurt. You really experience the four seasons in northwest Ohio.
