To begin with, when I arrived in Defiance, downtown was never really anything that came into my mind very often. In fact, the majority of my time was spent on campus in classes or with friends. However, after taking a tour around downtown myself, I have realized that there is actually a lot more to it than I initially thought.
At the first glance, Clinton Street can be considered to be downtown. To be honest, the first thing that caught my attention there was the abundance of brick buildings. There were restaurants, stores and small business that gave the impression that the district is quite historical but at the same time it is functioning and alive.
Probably the most notable building from a historical perspective was the Defiance County Courthouse. This building dates back to 1873, and it is obvious when you look at it that it has been an important part of the city for quite some time now. I am not big on architecture, but I guess this building is one of those places that make you stop and pay attention to it for a while.
It also surprised me to find out how long some of the local business establishments have been operating. For example, Meek’s Pastry Shop has been a downtown establishment since 1925, and Kissner’s Restaurant has been open since 1928. I find it pretty amazing since these businesses are not just ordinary ones; they are a part of the city’s history and contribute to the downtown’s uniqueness.
One more interesting place is Triangle Park. This is a little place where people can gather outdoors, and during summer months there are concerts and various other events there.
If I continue walking towards the rivers, I can reach Fort Defiance and see where the two rivers merge together. Fort Defiance was constructed there back in 1794, and this is what makes it the most interesting spot in downtown Defiance. It is unusual how I am able to walk along the streets of a regular small city, but somehow end up being in a place with so many stories.
What I like about downtown Defiance is how simple it is. There is no one main landmark that would attract tourists here. For me, visiting downtown Defiance is rather about walking around, looking at the old buildings, visiting local businesses, having something to eat, and discovering more about my college city.
