Hey, Yellow Jackets! How are you today? Today, I want to talk a little bit about the importance of the internship in your future career and how they will help you to have success.

Ever wondered what you will do when you finish college? Getting a college degree is always good, but is it really enough to get that perfect job? These days, the face of the corporate world is changing, and companies not only want degrees but they also want experience. This is one reason why internships are of utmost importance for college students.

First, work experience helps you get used to an actual working environment. In college, we learn theories, ideas, and various skills. But working for a company, we get to understand how those skills and theories are applied and put into practice on an everyday basis. For example, a business student learns about marketing, but at work experience, they could create marketing plans, engage with customers, and observe how a business functions.

The other big advantage is building professional skills. By doing an internship, students can enhance their ability to communicate and work as part of a team, to solve problems and manage time, all of which will help them in almost any career. Interns also learn how to relate to superiors, how to execute orders and to be accountable for their work. Sometimes, the lessons learned come hard.

Internships can also help you figure out what you don’t want to do. For example, you want to study business but you are pretty sure that you want a career in finance. Securing an internship at a financial firm might reveal that you might want to be a manager or do marketing.

Networking is a third benefit. Interns get the chance to meet people who are working in their major fields of interest. Gaining positive contacts with these folks can be valuable down the road. An internship can even turn into a full-time job after college, but even if it doesn’t, references and connections can be helpful in searching for other opportunities.

Last but not least, students need not wait until senior year to begin applying for internships. You should check with your career center and professors, go to career fairs, and apply online.

Ultimately, Internships are a tremendous opportunity for any student to take what they learn at school and make it a reality in the actual world. Internships allow students to acquire experience, build valuable skills, figure out their own interests, and get

themselves headed toward a successful career path. A college degree opens doors, but hands-on experiences can take you there.
