Hey, Yellow Jackets! Today, I am going to give you a tip about one of the most important skills that you can have throughout your entire life: adaptability! It can help you get through anything from problems in class to those found in your personal life.

Sports teach you that plans do not always survive contact with reality. You might start with a solid game plan, but then the other team shifts. The wind can pick up. The field can throw you off. A strange moment can pop up out of nowhere. You need to respond fast and try a new approach so your side stays in the game.

As a goalkeeper on the men’s soccer team, I see this up close. I cannot predict every turn of a match. Some plays mean I need to step in a different place. Other times, I have to talk to my teammates in a new way. I also need to choose quickly, often within a few seconds, and keep it moving from there.

School works the same way. A teacher might explain a topic in a style you just cannot follow. An assignment can end up harder than you thought. When that happens, you cannot just stop. You adjust. You study in a different way, ask questions, and look for another way to understand what you were given.

Work also demands the same kind of flexibility. Each workplace has its own mix of people and tasks. Problems do not show up the same way twice. If you can pick up new skills, handle feedback, and shift when things change, you can do better as an employee and as someone others can count on.

To me, adaptability is not about having an answer for everything ahead of time. It is about handling it when the plan breaks. Wherever life takes you, being able to adjust helps you keep moving forward.
