Hey, Yellow Jackets! Today I’m going to talk a little about how to save and manage your money, since you’re a college student and sometimes we don’t have enough money for the whole month.
Money management is an important skill for every college student. There are a number of expenses college students have to deal with, such as food, clothing, travel, school supplies, and entertainment. Also, some students have to budget for accommodation or other personal expenses. Knowing how to budget and make money stretch can make life a lot easier.
The easiest way to manage your money is to write a budget, which is a plan of how much money will come in, and how much you will spend on it each month. For example, you can look how much money is coming in, and balance it according to how much is spent on rent and transportation. Then, you can look at which expenses are the most important. Budgeting allows you to control your expenses and gives you a picture of the exact amount of money coming in.
One more tip you should be aware of is saving money when you go shopping for food. Every day you spend at a restaurant or buy food on food delivery could be a bad idea, depending on how often you go out. It is much better to try to spend less on groceries, cook easy meals, and compare prices before purchasing something. Plus, always make sure to consider various student discounts.
Students also need to understand the distinction between needs and wants. Needs are those items that people are required to pay for, like food, school supplies, and clothing. Wants are those things you simply have to have, like designer sneakers, video games, or dining out at an expensive restaurant. While you shouldn’t feel like you can’t ever spend money on entertainment, you still need to figure out where your money is going.
Saving money is also something that students need to learn to do. No matter how little they may be able to save each month, it is good to start saving for those times when a student may get hit with some unexpected expenses. For example, it will be handy if they have money saved in case the screen on their laptop breaks or an unforeseen charge is added to a tuition bill.
In conclusion, good money habits are an important part of becoming an independent adult. If you manage your money by establishing a budget, making good choices when you spend money, distinguishing between what you want and need and saving money, then financial stress can be minimized. College is a time to learn, and this also applies to money management.
