Hey, Yellow Jackets, how are you today? So today I’m here to talk a little bit about how you can make new friends at college and how to be part of a group. College is such an important experience because it’s where students make new discoveries, new friends and take the next step in building their future careers. But, being at college can also be difficult for some people, because they can find themselves in a new city or country far away from their family and old friends. So, making new friends is a crucial part of having a positive college experience.

Joining college activities is a great way to make friends at college. While different colleges have different activities, one thing is common: there are various options like parties, sports, student organizations, and special events. There are different ways to get to know people with similar interests, like any individual who likes playing soccer can join the team or can go for matches along with other students.

Another way to form a bond with the person sitting next to you is simply to strike up a conversation. It’s natural to feel hesitant about talking to your peers at first for fear of seeming awkward or being judged negatively. But a question about a class or homework assignment or professor may be the first step in forming a friendship. Studying with a classmate is also a great way to meet new people while studying.

College is a great time to broaden your horizons about new places. For example, at Defiance College you can meet others that are from a different place or are new to the U.S. When you’re willing to learn about other countries and cultures, it helps you to be more aware of the world around you.

Lastly, be aware that you will not automatically like everyone. To make friends you need to take time to get to know people and spend time with them. Not everyone you meet will be your friend, and that’s OK! When students are not worried about making friends, they are able to work at developing real relationships with those who trust them.

Making friends at college means you can also have a good social life, that your emotional health will be better, and your college experience will be memorable!
