The Yellow Jackets were able to hold Manchester to 170 yards on the ground only giving up one big play in the ground game, a 60 yard score in the first half. Struggles against the passing game were existent, giving up two scores from 60 yards and one from 30 yards.
Despite some struggles, the Yellow Jacket defense still performed well forcing a fumble in the redzone, batting down a pair of passes at the line of scrimmage, a number of tackles for loss and a blocked punt caught by Jr. Alex Frick and returned to the nine-yard line setting up the offence for their first points midway through the first quarter.
Defiance was able to score through the air on a pass from Logan Scott to Cody Wilson nine yards off the goal line. Wilson would become his favorite target for the afternoon connecting six more times for more than 90 yards.
The longest play from the Jackets offense came from a deflected pass brought in by Tom Woehnker, his solo reception of the game, going for 54 yards.
Afterwards, Defiance would have to wait until the third quarter to score again when Scott found Wilson through the air for a 30 yard touchdown. Scott also found the endzone himself late in the 4th as well as he rushed in from the one-yard line.
Building off the increased offensive tempo, the Yellow Jacket defense found their stride on the second half holding Manchester’s offense to just one score in the 4th quarter.
Next Saturday, October 17, Defiance travels to play undefeated conference opponent Rose-Hulman (5-0). The game is scheduled to start at 1:30.
