DC Hunger Games
(Defiance, OH) The Hunger Games is a huge hit, starting as a best selling novel then turning into a movie that took the nation by storm. The success of this series has people making references to it everyday. It was no surprise when Senior Lindsay Kasmer, who was rushing for an idea for an event for hunger, saw the movie and instantly knew should make her event follow the Hunger Games.
Lindsay setup the event so students can create teams of 5, who go through both physical and mental tasks, that are loosely based off the movie. Lindsay promised that no events will be lethal. The exact events are being kept a secret until the event because the Hunger Games contestants never knew what they were getting into.
Students do not just get into the event for free though, they can either donate a non-perishable food item or do what is called “Swipe Out for Hunger.”
Swipe Out for Hunger is where students will give up their meal swipe on Tuesday November 18, 2014 and Sodexo will take the money from that meal and buy wholesale food to donate to the Path Center, which is a homeless shelter in Defiance.
The Path Center serves a meal every day, even on emergency situations or holidays. Students will not be able to get dinner on this night, and they cannot give up any other meal than dinner.
If students are not participating, they can still donate by Swiping Out for Hunger or donating a non-perishable food item. If students do Swipe Out for Hunger, they will be entered into a raffle, where two students will win $15 gift cards of munch money, or the grand prize winner of a gourmet catered meal for 5 sponsored by Sodexo.
Students at the event will also receive raffle tickets to win gift cards to local restaurants. Then, the winning team will receive a duffle bag filled with items for international education week, a trophy, and of course bragging rights.
This event is Tuesday, November 18th at 8 PM in the George. Students who are not participating are still invited to attend the event and support this great event.
