DCSB: Go Purple, Be Gold

– Tori Johnston (Defiance, OH)

Defiance College Softball played their first inter-squad scrimmage on Saturday, September 19th.  The double-header scrimmage was hosted at The Sal and was a matchup between Purple & Gold, teams composed of DCSB players.  A family potluck dinner was hosted by the Yellow Jackets afterwards to introduce all of the new squad members and their families.

Both games ended with close and exciting results. Purple took the win in the first game with a final score resulting in 6-4, but Gold made a comeback for game two and won 9-6.

Senior Makayla McAvoy hit two home-runs on the day, with one being a momentum changing four-run grand slam.  A couple extra base hits were produced, as well as some tough outs that illustrate Defiance Softball’s depth on the field.

Junior Megan Warren for the Gold team had back to back line drives for the pair of 3rd basemen Callie Bauer and Michaela Bauer, however both of the rockets were caught for outs.  Katie Kuhn for the Purple squad also had a screaming line drive hit back up the middle at Gold Pitcher Sydni Smith.  Smith made a play on the ball and it resulted in an out at first.  Exceptional defense was played by both teams, knocking down some very well hit offensive balls.

Head Coach Jodie Holava had this to say about the Purple and Gold scrimmage, “The Purple/Gold Scrimmage was a tremendous success this year! The coaching staff is very optimistic about the upcoming season for Team 35. We had a high level of competitiveness on the field and a lot to look forward too. We can anticipate great things from our freshmen class and have already witnessed many improvements from our returners.”

With supportive parents on board and player chemistry at a season high, Team 35 looks forward to their upcoming fall ball tournament on October 3rd.  They will be facing off against UNOH and The University of Michigan-Dearborn, games beginning at 10:00am with DCSB vs. Dearborn first.  Students and faculty are encouraged to attend and provide support.
