DCWB: Ashley Williams

-Waverly Weaks (Defiance, OH)

The Defiance Women’s Basketball team for the 2015-2016 season is looking good, returning all but one of their players from last season.

Recently, I had the privilege to interview #12, junior Ashley Williams.

Williams is from Leipsic, Ohio and attended Pandora-Gilboa High School where she was coached by Ken Brooks while playing varsity for four years. For her freshman year in high school, Williams’ role was to learn for the next three years. The next year, as a sophomore, her role quickly changed into starting point guard since the head point guard was injured. The last two years of basketball at Pandora-Gilboa, Williams stepped up as a leader and became a captain.

When looking at colleges, Defiance College stood out because she came to open gyms and liked the team atmosphere of the school. She also liked the way the team played and felt like she fit in, while also liking Coach Cox. With playing at the college level, she feels privileged to play with her teammates who are also passionate about the game.

Williams showed Coach Cox that she wanted to be a leader for the team with being a captain her sophomore year. This year, as a junior with no seniors on the team, Williams continues in the leadership role with the other junior captains to keep the team on track for this season. With such a young but experienced team, the girls are working hard with showing tremendous potential. Williams believes they will be a strong team this year and will continue down the road.

Some advice for other athletes to take away from Williams is that you need to “have passion and pride for what you do and love. Always give your all at what you do, because you never know how long you will be able to play or compete. Make the most of everything you do, through sports and life in general.” I encourage all you, Defiance College fans, to make it out to a game to watch the Woman’s Basketball team and cheer on #12 and her team to a successful season!
