  • A Spring Tradition

By Barb Sedlock, Metadata and Archives Librarian

Here’s a forgotten spring tradition on the DC campus:  Whitney vs. McReynolds! Fraternity vs. sorority!   And where did these contests take place?  On choir risers!  Yes, DC students used to compete in singing contests.

  • Early Mornings for DCSB

From January 25th all the way to March 3rd, one thing has been daunting the Defiance College Softball team: 5 a.m.’s. Members of the team wake up Monday through Saturday between 3:30 and 4 in order to start practice at 5 in the morning. It’s a long and treacherous six weeks, but it is not without rewards.

  • The 1950’s At Defiance College

    – Barbara Sedlock, DC Archivist

The 1950s is the decade when Russia’s launch of Sputnik started the space race, Senator Joseph McCarthy was the force behind Communist “witch hunts” in the U.S., and Crick and Watson discovered the structure of DNA.  It was the decade when major league baseball became fully integrated, the Civil Rights movement began, and Charlie Parker and Miles Davis were leaders of jazz.  Elvis was rock and roll’s king, science fiction and monster movies were popular, and the 50s saw the opening of Disneyland and the first McDonald’s.

Defiance College was in the national spotlight in the 50s due to President Kevin McCann.  He took office in 1951, after DC trustees asked former General Dwight (“Ike”) Eisenhower, who was then President of Columbia University, for suggestions of candidates for DC’s presidency.  McCann was one of Eisenhower’s aides at the time, read the letter, and proposed himself as one of the candidates.

  • The Power of Athletes

    – Jordan Osborne (Defiance, OH)

When the University of Missouri’s football team boycotted all football and all activities involving the sport, the entire country paid attention to what was really going on. Since the beginning of the 2015-16 school years, the campus has experienced several racist incidents.

  • Just Keep Swimming: Brittany Pease

    – Kailin Regutti (Defiance, OH)

For many students, leaving behind a sport they love is difficult and painful. After years of doing something you love, retiring the jersey or throwing the towel in is not always an easy option. That is why joining a sports team at a D-III college is a great way for students to still participate in a sport they love.

D-III athletes can focus both on academics and still stay active by joining a team they have a passion for. Many students who attend Defiance College belong to the Jacket Nation Athletic community.
